![]() ![]() The use of second person narration was cool, I guess you don’t see that very often. So maybe that’s a good thing for some people. I know he was friends with Bret Ellis, but it just seems like Ellis but kind of declawed. I’m also not sure why this was as apparently popular as it was upon release. I think I just had it sitting around and it read fast enough to keep me engaged. It was my first Auster and a the beginning of a beautiful friendship. ![]() So really I read three books as three parts of the same novel. I think this one was my favorite of the New York Trilogy, except that I didn’t think of separating them until I made this list. But as it is Gaddis sabotaged himself by writing a book that is almost literally too good. ![]() If more people were able/interested in surmounting this 960 page giant I think it would be roundly considered possibly the best American novel. ![]()
